Do Nose Piercings Hurt or Does Nose Piercing Hurt–  Pain

Nose Piercing Pain – Does Nose Piercing Hurt - Does it Hurt
is it painful?

Do nose piercing hurt? Does nose piercing hurt? This is a common question in most online forums from people who are thinking about getting their nose pierced. If the question sounds familiar to you, then you deserve to know that the procedure hurts, just like any other kind of body piercing.

After all getting a your nose pierced involves jabbing a sterile needle right into your nostril or septum.

We also need to consider the fact that the process involves thrusting a needle followed by jewelry (nose stud or bone, nose screw, or nose ring) through cartilage as opposed to navel piercing, belly buttons and ear piercing among others that involves jabbing a needle and jewelry through fleshy or fatty tissues.

As a result, piercings on the nose are relatively more painful than these other piercings. It is also normal for your eyes to water during the actual piercing as a reaction to the needle but luckily, the process doesn’t last more than 30 seconds if done by a professional piercer.

Pain also varies with the type and size of the nose jewelry that someone is wearing. For example, a nose ring is likely to hurt less than a nose stud which typically comes with a small bulb at the end that is forced through the hole to hold the stud in place. In fact the ring is the best option for newly pierced nose as it facilitates more thorough cleaning and faster healing.

A smaller jewelry will also most likely hurt less than a smaller one since it doesn’t cause trauma to the piercing area.

Using the wrong jewelry can also cause undue pain. Plated jewelry items often have nickel which can trigger allergic reactions on the piercing wound. The best options for jewelry are titanium, stainless steel, and niobium. 14 or 18 karat gold jewelry is as well fine.

The degree of pain also depends on the type of nose piercing; that is the location of the piercing. Septum piercings (piercing on the central cartilage that forms the boundary between the right and the left nostrils) tend to hurt a bit more than nostril piercings (the traditional piercing done on the outside of the nose in the area between the cheek and the nose tip).

This is because septum piercing more often than not involves piercing on thicker cartilage tissues than nostril piercings.

The pain is however bearable, it is not like the nose piercing professional will be cutting a limb and considering the fact that the benefits far outweighs the pain if you will agree with me. A piercing on the nose is not only a splendid way to make a fashion statement and express your personality, but also an amazing way to accentuate your facial features.

The pain lasts only a short time if you observe the good aftercare measures keenly throughout the healing phase of the piercing. You will particularly need to keep your piercing absolutely clean by using antibacterial soap and sea salt soaks but at the same time, you shouldn’t over-clean the piercing area to avoid irritation (2 to 3 times a day is enough)

Lastly it deserves to be mentioned that pain is relative and varies from one person to the other. In other words, different people have different pain tolerance.

For example, one nose piercee in an online forum reported feeling pain only for the three that the piercing needle was inside her nose but the pain that followed after that was not really significant while her sister on the other hand is reported saying that the nose piercing hurt more than anything she had ever experienced in her life.

The two piercee and indeed all piercees who have shared their experience on various online platforms however seem to agree on one thing; there is usually some degree of pain and that is to be expected anyway.

Nose Piercing Pain Scale or Level

Rather than “do nose piercings hurt?” I think the question should be “How much does a nose piercing hurt. I say this because it is expected that sticking a needle to any part of the body would hurt.

But like we said, the pain is largely bearable until you have really low tolerance for pain. It is not like you will dash out of the piercing shop crying and calling your mom :).

I had the time to research in numerous online forums and most people who have had once pierced their nose put the pain level at around 3 on a scale of 1-10 with 1 repressing the lowest pain level and 10 representing the highest pain level.

You can maintain the pain level at its lowest after piercing by following the aftercare measures given by the piercing professional closely.

Nose Piercing Pain Relief

The easiest and most straightforward way to get nose piercing pain relief is to follow the pierced nose aftercare measures given very keenly. This prevents infections and trauma on the pierced area thus minimizing the pain associated with piercing process while facilitating faster healing. You will especially want to

ensure proper hygiene regimen for the piercing by using saline soaks 2 to 3 times a day.

Hope this helps with your concern about the pain of piercing your nose. As is to be expected, piercing your nose hurts, but the pain is largely bearable and short-lived especially if you take appropriate after-care to avoid infections and irritation. What is more, those studs and rings are so cute and adorn your facial features so well that most people would not mind the pain a minute. So go for it if piercing your nose tickles your fancy.

  1. there are so many things wrong with this article. gold and silver jewelry is not recommended because of the impurities in it, and septum piercings are not supposed to be pierced through cartilage, just a vert thin piece of skin that people refer to as the sweet spot. Ive had a lot of piercing so im going to make a ranking of hurt from least to most

    1. septum- i didn’t even realize the needle had gone through
    2. navel
    3. nose- a bit uncomfortable though because you can hear and feel cartilage popping
    4. eyebrow- same pain as plucking them
    5. lip- on this scale it seems very painful but nothing to worry about (clamping the area hurts more)
    6. tragus- this one hurt like a lil bitch but worth it, by far my favorite piercing
    7. cartilage believe it or not you will hear your skin and cartilage popping, very tough skin, maybe ask if they have surgical grade lubricant to reduce friction bc it hurts like hellç

a general rule of thumb is to pinch the area you want pierced with your nails. that is about the pain you will expirance
